A 19th Century Curling Stone, 1880 Granite (Ailsa Craig) Scotland, bronze furniture with a hardwood handle

Ailsa Craig is a small, volcanic island located in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Covering about 600 acres, it is renowned for its distinctive shape and rich history. The island’s granite is famous worldwide for producing high-quality curling stones.  The granite’s unique properties, including its durability, make it ideal for crafting curling stones.

Historically, Ailsa Craig has been quarried for centuries, with the granite used in various construction projects, including the famous Nelson’s Column in London. The first curling stones made from Ailsa Craig granite were produced in the 19th century, and the island’s granite has since become a staple for creating tournament-quality stones. Today, Ailsa Craig remains a key source for curling stones, symbolising Scottish heritage and the sport's long-standing traditions.
